best laid plans
After writing the post “balls” I remembered another attempt of mine to play amateur sports– a turn at floor hockey. Again, there were lots of men, but the second game left me in a knee brace and resulted in months of rehab.
I liked the idea of surfing but soon realized that it required a time commitment incompatible with my full-time job. The one thing that will stay with me, though, is that surfing seems the perfect metaphor for life, as not only are you moving, but the very ground beneath your feet is moving as well.
At least I will always have Willard Spiegelman’s “seven pleasures”– aka “activities that are free and accessible to anyone with a library card and a pair of comfortable shoes” (Publishers Weekly):
